Question of: Ensuring Gender Equality in the Workplace

THE UN WOMEN,
Guided by the purposes and principles enshrined in Charter of the United Nations,
Recognizing that the promotion and empowerment of women and that support for women’s organizations and networks are essential in the consolidation of peace to promote the equal and full participation of women and encourages member states, donors, and civil society, including non-governmental organizations, to provide support in this respect,
Having considered that States bear the primary responsibility to respect and ensure the human rights of all persons within their territory and subject to their jurisdiction as provided for by international law,
Reaffirming that women’s and girls’ empowerment and gender equality are critical to efforts to maintain international peace
Emphasizing that and through concerted leadership, consistent information and action, and support, to build women’s engagement in all levels of decision-making,
Expressing concern at women’s unequal citizenship rights, working conditions, gender-biased laws, and gender inequality which occur in many situations, and underlining that every person has to live under equal rights,
Bearing in mind that the primary responsibility of the UN Women under the Charter for the maintenance of international peace and equality in gender,
- Encourages to set policies of the handbook in workplaces where employers, employees,
and admissions must respect every religion, culture, ethnicity, religious clothing,
LGBTQ+ community members, race, etc. of all sorts and would receive consequences otherwise by:
- Building worshipping rooms for different religions based on the
varieties of the minorities in a company b. Build genderless toilets for LGBTQ+ community members and
transgender people. c. Set an agreement between employers and employees that they must
respect each other amid their differences d. employers and employees are entitled to sue their company if they are
confronted with any sort of discrimination.
- Recommends to raise awareness in the countries in which the wage gap percentage is high
by:
- by making conferences, projects such as the UN, etc.
- Requires education to be given on the subject of labor rights in middle schools and girls
should feel more encouraged about their skills
- Encouraging and directing girls to other areas by giving extra lessons
and presentations by the government
- Advices all member states of the UN to have a commission which is going to detect the
wage gap between genders by:
- If the wage gap is above 15%, it must be detected and inspectors
should be sent to those areas b. having the ability to give money penalties to the companies c. depending on the wage is between genders, the penalty will be
consisting of 4% of the companies’ yearly income d. 50% of the collected money will be donated to IWSA (international woman’s solidarity associations) and the rest will be donated to the career education of girls. e. The offices of the commission in every country will select an
ambassador that will have a meeting where they will be discussing the wage gaps and possible ways to minimize the gap in every country
- Further recommends implementing a list of solutions in means of combating work-life
imbalances and maternity leaves which are:
- A policy called parental leave must be applied in order to grant both
parents a reasonable amount of leave for their parental roles b. Fathers must have a month off of paternity leave when their child is first born and at the same time receiving his full pay during that duration, c. Following the birth of the fathers’ child, they must be given the right to
work only 80% of their daily work hours for an entire year whilst receiving their full pay d. Mothers should be allowed to leave their workplaces two months
before birth and 10 months after birth while receiving full pay during that duration. e. The government should provide healthcare and insurance for at least
40% of the workers’ children’s needs for single mothers until the child is of age.
- Strongly advises all member states to create an IGO in order to preclude sexual
harassment which is commissioned by:
- Organize seminars about sexual harassment incidents in both the
physical and psychological aspects at schools which both teachers and students will attend b. publish advertisements to raise awareness about the harms of sexual
harassment
- Invites all member states to educate the youth concerning sexual health and protection by:
- Teaching children ranging from ages six to eight about the importance
of their identity and respect whilst encouraging them to protect their private parts and why b. Educating 10 to 12-year-old females on the menstruation and the
importance of this cycle to their lives at schools, c. Give sex education to middle and high schoolers on:
- Consent ii. Sexual harassment iii. Protection iv. The dangers and consequences of sex (HIV, pregnancy,
etc.)
- Supports gender equality throughout schools and homes through:
- Granting girls the legal right to go to school by
- Fundraising money for local areas where children are
unable to go to school due to gender inequality and traditional stereotypes, funded by the government and the UN Women, ii. Raising awareness
- seminars b. fundraisers c. advertisements d. pamphlets
- Assures an environment for the equal interview process and a legitimate evolution by for
the workplaces that have been reported to the Commission of Workplace Equality because of discriminatory actions during the interviews
- Making company interviewers preparing the questions with equal
rights and hiring applicable advocates assigned by their governments’ woman rights department or the office of UN women b. Assigning an observer from equal rights organization to observe the
interview and interrupt if needed c. To remove any sort of irrelevant questions regarding maternity, future
plans, ethnicity, religion as it would be offensive
